One of our most popular furniture pieces is a bookcases or cabinet! A carefully curated bookcase or glass cabinet is a standout feature to any home, especially a Hamptons home. It can help to instantly personalise, organise and elevate your interior spaces! A bookcase or glass cabinet provides your keepsakes with a beautiful home, letting them take centre stage by adding colour and personality to any space. Having multiple shelves and the ability to vertically group your decorative items will help to create a focal point for your interiors plus avoid lots of clutter all over on your consoles and buffets or open shelves. A cabinet is is almost seen by interior designers and interior enthusiasts as a storyteller.
A cabinet provides much needed storage in a home. At Style My Home we aim to make practical cabinets that will hold both your everyday items you dont want your guests seeing with those that you want to showcase. This is why we focus on a range of bookcases and glass cabinets that has both closed and open (or visible storage) in it.
Here are the key factors to consider when choosing a bookcase. With the fresh charm of Hamptons style Hamptons Bookshelf, you’ll fall in love with your home.
1) Type of storage needed
Everyones storage needs differ depending on the size and use of the space.
As noted already, whilst we occasionally meet clients who want completely visually open shelves (where the items are completely open or completely visible behind glass) or completely closed storage (where storage is behind timber doors or drawers and not visible) spaces, the vast majority want a mixed approach where the bottom section is closed and the top section if visible. This open/ closed approach is a match made in heaven for most homes and certainly our favourite designs visually as well. You can store your everyday essentials below (we are thinking items you want hidden like board games, notepads, kitchen applicances, etc) with your open storage items to showcase your homes style above like keepsakes, photos sculptures and books.
This example of a cabinet with combination storage featuring both visible and closed storage.
If buying from our store the first question is whether you want an open bookcase at the top or a glass cabinet. This depends on how you intend to use the space. Ask yourselves how often you need to access the goods on top if at all. For our customers wanting to display televisions or books used on a regular basis, our bookcases are the correct choice.
On the other hand for our customers who don't like dusting and just want a space to admire their keepsakes or items like glassware, a glass display cabinet may be a better choice. View our range of glass cabinets here.

2) Size
Size is probably, as always, the most important factor to start with. Placing an overly big piece into a small room or vice versa can be a disastrous mistake. Measure your space carefully, including your ceiling height.
Be sure to consider access before purchasing. Our team can help inform you of dimensions if you need to consider lift access, tight access or stairs.
Our 'Regency' one bay display unit is our smallest cabinet. It even comes with the open of left opening or right opening doors depending on where our clients want to place it. We have been some clients even pair the left and right around a fireplace with stunning results.
Our largest pieces are open libraries. Our most popular options are our full wall units which are upo to 2.7m wide with removable shelves. These can even be used for televisions.
2) Cabinet style
Once you have the scale correct its time to consider the style or shape. Being a Hamptons store, all of our designs are timeless and simple choices that will last the test of time. But there are a few options in terms of shape, such as choosing between this Arch cabinet or a more simple rectangular style.
Our customers are loving our new Arch glass cabinets! This has been popular for modern Hamptons or farmhouse style homes.
4) Finish
Our range of bookcases focus on our beautiful satin white finish. A satin white finish after all is always a classic choice and reminds us of inbuilt cabinetry that will never date. A white backdrop also allows your keepsakes to pop and standout.
A white backdrop lets your keepsakes take centre stage.
Certain spaces do cry out for a timber (whitewash oak) and black finish though so we now offer these finishes in our new 'Arch' glass display style.
We hope that this helps choose a bookcase or cabinet perfect for your space. Here is a link to our range here. For advice, please feel free to visit or call your local SMH showroom.
And remember once you have chosen your forever piece, one of the most common questions is how to style it. There is a vast array of items which can be used to style your piece such as books (stacked vertically or horizontally), keepsakes, photos, baskets or even decorative artwork. Remember to focus on natural textures, blue and white ceramics and silver accents which are synonymous with hamptons style. For tips on styling your new bookcase, re our blog here.
